The "wheeze-honk" call made by hippos in the water
is one of the most familiar sounds of Africa. In addition to what
we hear above water, hippos also vocalize underwater with up to
80% of their sounds being transmitted in this manner.
This familiar honking call is also used underwater together with
a range of clicks, groans, grunts and whines.
