More often heard than seen, this small bustard is a
common but rather secretive bird of the drier savanna areas of
southern Africa. In addition to its spectacular call, it has an
amazing breeding display flying straight up well above the tree
line and suddenly dropping as if shot and only opening its wings
to break the fall almost at ground level.
The call starts with a long series of loud tongue clicks before going into piercing series of whistles.
In this recording an elephant rumbles while the bird is clicking.
