The Ground Hornbill is listed as 'Vulnerable' in South Africa but fortunately it is still
common in Zambia where this recording was made. The booming call is most often heard
at dawn when the group advertise their territory, often starting before daylight and
continuing for long periods. The dominant pair usually start the duet with other members
of the group then joining in. The male has the deeper voice or pitch.
