The Grey Crowned Crane is one of the most striking birds of the floodplains and grasslands of
southern Africa. Well-named after its amazing golden crown, a stiff crest of feathers on the
top of the head, it also has bright red gular sacs under the chin that are inflated when it is
calling. The rather mournful call is a characteristic sound of the bush.
